BRAIN CANCER

A Brain cancer is a non-cancerous tumor that develops on the nerve that connects the ear to the brain. The tumor usually grows slowly. As it grows, it presses against the hearing and balance nerves.
At first, you may have no symptoms or mild symptoms. They can include loss of hearing on one side, ringing in ears, dizziness and balance problems.
The tumor can also eventually cause numbness or paralysis of the face. If it grows large enough, it can press against the brain, becoming life-threatening.
Brain cancer can be difficult to diagnose, because the symptoms are similar to those of middle ear problems. Ear examination, hearing tests, and scans can reveal it.

TYPES

On May 9, 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) published an official reclassification of Tumor Types of the Central Nervous System, which has moved the greater neuro-oncology field toward a more precise and accurate system of brain tumor classification.

  • Acoustic Neuroma
  • Astrocytoma:
  • Chordoma
  • CNS Lymphoma
  • Craniopharyngioma
  • Other Gliomas:
  • Brain Stem Glioma
  • Ependymoma
  • Mixed Glioma
  • Optic Nerve Glioma
  • Subependymoma
  • Medulloblastoma
  • Meningioma
  • Metastatic Brain Tumors
  • Oligodendroglioma
  • Pituitary Tumors
  • Primitive Neuroectodermal (PNET)
  • Other Brain-Related Conditions
  • Schwannoma

The following tumor types are more common in children than in adults:

  • Brain Stem Glioma
  • Craniopharyn gioma
  • Ependymoma
  • Juvenile Pilocytic Astrocytoma (JPA)
  • Medulloblastoma
  • Optic Nerve Glioma
  • Pineal Tumor
  • Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumors (PNET)
  • Rhabdoid Tumor

BRAIN CANCER

Causes of Brain cancer:

Two types of Brain cancer occur one is a sporadic form of a syndrome called neurofibromatosis type II which is an inherited disorder characterized by the growth of noncancerous tumors in the nervous system. And Brain cancer which are the most common of these tumors and often appear in both the ears. A malfunctioning gene appears to be the cause of tumors on the main balance nerves from the inner ear to other parts of the brain or eight cranial nerve. Currently, there are no known risk factors that are associated with Brain cancer, however, some suggest for genetic risk of neurofibromatosis type 2 of parent that accounts for a small number of cases and low dose radiation exposure to the parts of head and neck are also the possible causes for Brain cancer.

Common signs and symptoms of Brain Cancer

  • Hearing loss only one side
  • Ringing ears
  • Loss of balance
  • Facial numbness
  • Feeling of fullness in one ear
  • Headaches
  • Double vision
  • Facial weakness
  • Nausea and vomiting

BRAIN CANCER

Diagnosis of Brain Cancer:

If a routine hearing test results in hearing loss an audiogram should help in further evaluation for both the ears. At Sanjeevani doctors will examine, evaluate with a list of questions and to further confirm the diagnosis the doctors may write an MRI scan which can confirm the condition as an Brain cancer.

Treatment options for Brain cancer:

The treatment for Brain cancer depends on multiple factors including the age of the patient, medical status of the patient, tumor size and the exact location. The treatment for Brain cancer at Sanjeevani cancer hospital has three main courses namely Surgery and Radiation therapy.

Surgical Treatment

There are three major surgical approaches that are involved in the surgical removal of Brain cancer they are –
Tranlabyrinthine, Retrosigmoid, Middle Fossaand a new less invasive technique called as Total endoscopic resection which is done with a camera probe to assist in surgery.

Radiation Therapy

Sanjeevani cancer hospital has the best Radiation Therapy experts while the treatment is done with State of the art delivery techniques not less than any other hospital of Chhattisgarh. The treatment is such that it sends high doses of radiation to the tumor, however limiting exposure to the surrounding normal tissue.

S.C.C.H established Chhattisgarh’s first  Tumour Board where treatment planning is done by several teams including leading Radiation Oncologists, Physicists and Radiation Technologists along with the group of highly skilled allied medical experts.
